. >> the latest unemployment figures are trending in the wrong direction. jennifer franciotti is live downtown with more on this. good morning. >> if you have been out of work, this news comes as no surprise. finding a job is not easy. there is discouraging news. maryland's unemployment rate rose unemployment7.3% in august. there was a significant increase in unemployment in maryland and florida. the number dropped since the recession reportedly ended. >> the labor market will always lag the recovery. the economic output has increase. the labor market has not caught up with that. in terms of getting by with squeezing more productivity out of existing workers. >> there is a website to help marylanders out of work of finding a job. is the maryland workforce exchange. we have posted a link on our website. click on project economy. jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> the news is not all bad. 200 new jobs will be created and the transmission plants in white marsh. this is thanks to a government grant. it was approved by the government. there is good news for a change on the housing market. new
breaking news out of northwest baltimore. there was a two alarm blaze this morning. >> jennifer franciotti is live at the scene in northwest with more. good morning. >> that fire is under control. firefighters are putting out some hot spots. it looks like a portion of liberty heights was shut down. in looks like traffic has reopened. fire fighters were using a fire hydrant along liberty heights. the fire started about 3:30 this morning on hillsdale. it happened to a vacant house. the intensity of the fire was so big that it's spread to two adjacent homes. one of the homes had been turned into a nursing home with four residents. they were safely evacuated. no injuries reported there. the other house, there was one occupant inside. he got out safely. no one was inside the vacant house. it did go to two alarms because of the intensity of the fire. firefighters were able to make a good knock on the fire and get everything under control. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. fire equipment remains on the scene. reporting live, jennifer franciotti, wbal-tv 11 news. >> it thank you.
turn violent. >> a senator is stepping down after being indicted on bribery and extortion. jennifer franciotti joins us now with more on the case. >> despite an fbi raid on his home in 2008, currie continued to work as investigators looked into his ties to shoppers food warehouse. he is accused of using his office to benefit the grocery store chains. it is alleged he was paid $245,000 to secure advantages for shoppers. the indictment says he tried to save the chain of money and to give them an extension on meeting energy efficiency standards. he is accused of smoothing the way for a liquor license. he was a consultant for shoppers and his fees were disclosed. the chair of public policy says it is unusual to see a paper trail in a bribery case. >> the information is pretty iinteresting in that usually there is not a paper tropics prosecutors say currie failed to disclose his income on ethics forms. he will step down from some of his duties. we'll have more at 6:30. >> a man will spend the rest of his life behind bars. he was convicted back in may for the murder of another man in octo
:30 a.m. jennifer franciotti live on the scene this morning. bring us up to date. >> if you're traveling this way, falls road is shut down at northern parkway because this fire happened on a northern parkway address as you take falls road south toward the city. there's a side road parallel to northern parkway. 2 1/2-story building caught fire. inside six people, four women a grandfather and a 10-year-old boy. one of the victims say this fire started in a second-floor building and a 57-year-old grandmother was forced to jump from an atic and suffered injuries to her legs. two other women had to jump from the second floor as flames were shooting out the windows. one victim describes how it happens. >> i was so scared of the jumping asal perfect and it took me a minute and i was on the phone with 911 then i heard the boards starting to crack and crack and crack, so i had to jump. >> be so terrifying. that was christine who also told us one of the factors, her hair was being sinaged by the fire, and she could feel the fire burning her arm. luckily everyone else was able to get out of the hou

of time. >> good morning, i'm jennifer franciotti. it is 7:26. here's a look at some of our top stories for you. in baltimore city, a fight between two family members turned deadly. officers were called just before 8:00 last night to the 1000 block of north stricker street in west baltimore for a fight between her aunt and her niece. the injuries to the aunt were so bad she was taken to the hospital where she later died. police are still investigating this case. >> three people are recovering after being stabbed onboard an m.t.a. bus. it happened around 2:30 at liberty heights in northwest avenue near the mall. a fight broke out on bus number 51 which left three people with stab wounds. >> the bus driver brought the bus to rest here outside the mall. there were people here scheduled for their regular after-school duty, and people were unloading the bus, and the officers were able to board the bus and get the officers off. >> all three victims were taken to area hospitals and are expected to survive. police are continuing to investigate. >> in a separate stabbing incident, police are loo
